The whirlwind of people at Alamo City Comic Con
So, I went to Alamo City Comic Con, and all I bought was one lousy comic.
Well, it wasn’t lousy. Actually, the comic was a con exclusive and one of 1000 printed. Not bad.
I finally got to wear my Tank Girl cosplay, also not bad.
Just before Halloween this year my boyfriend, our two buddies, and I made the drive down to San Antonio for Alamo City Comic Con at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The last time I went to Alamo City Comic Con was a good four years ago.
Since I have been away from my hometown for some time, I had no idea Henry B. got a gigantic makeover/expansion. As my boyfriend and I were getting paraded around to pick up our wristbands for the day, I realized where we were walking through was where comic con used to be held.
Even though there were literally thousands of people moving through the line, things went rather quickly and smoothly. My boyfriend and I had just a few moments where we actually standing still. But, during one of those moments when we were queued up, something magical happened.
Before we left for the con I took a picture of my cosplay for Instagram. So while we were waiting in line, my Twitter notification went off. I looked down and saw that the “Tank Girl,” Ms. Lori Petty not only liked my pic, but also retweeted and commented.
I was beyond ecstatic. At that point I wasn’t sure if I needed to even go to the con anymore. My day was made.
With energy that magic moment gave me and the anticipation of seeing what the new Henry B. had for us, we were off.
_____
From the time we entered until we left, there was just a sea of people in every direction.
The one thing I love most about comic con or any con is the variety of people: all genders, colors, ages, fandoms, and any other demographic you can think of. It is just an amazing thing to see so many random strangers brought together because of the positive yet powerful connection to comics. I digress.
Of course like any good con there was tons of stuff to buy. We got shirts, mugs, stickers, prints, and probably some other trinkets that I can’t recall right now.
There was so much to see and only so much time before our wallets ran out of cash.
A few of my friends were there as well. Looking at their pictures, I soon realized that as much walking as we did, there were parts of the convention hall we didn’t even walk past. Henry B. is a behemoth of venue.
Final thoughts, it was exhausting but worth it. My boyfriend has never been to any con before this one. He is excited to go to another. For me, hearing that is the best part of our adventure. Because for all the mayhem and chaos that goes on at cons, to have him say let’s do that again made it all worth it.
Next October, if you’re nearby, I recommend going to Alamo City Comic Con.
Just don’t eat at the Denny’s.
