SXSW: For Almost Free

Having a badge at SXSW is like trying to wish for a leprechaun to appear.  And as a grad student, a badge is impossible to obtain.

So, last year me and my two friends decided to take 6th street by force and see what things we could do for free.
This year me and my best friend decided to see if lightning would strike twice.

The most important thing to get the most for nothing is timing.
We arrived there at 3p.m. and most places had no cover to get in, no “badge only” scary doormen to scare people off, and less people, which means the chances to get close to the band are high.

Another way to get through SXSW for no money is to hide from the bartender and stay sober.
However, I know some people go to SXSW for the opportunity to drink, but if you are trying to save cash this is a huge money saver.

Stopping and watching the random solos and small bands that play outside the venues in the street are always fun to listen to at SXSW as well.
I like to give them a couple bucks if they are entertaining, but this is optional.IMG_1410

Food and water are huge necessities if you are going to be walking around for 7+ hours on 6th.
Before heading out, take a moment to search for places off 6th to eat that are both within walking distance and reasonably priced.  And, do not be afraid to keep asking for water refills.  It is Texas. It is going to be hot.

Overall, for wandering around from venue to venue and going inside whenever my best friend and I heard a sound we liked, it was a good trip.
So, SXSW can be still be fun even for almost free.
